There are a lot of interesting episodes and touches in this book, but it doesn’t come together like it could have. Alfred Kubin’s atmospheric book is precisely what I expected it to be just from looking at his works. Some vivid passages; A dream sequence, An elderly fellow with an abnormally big torso and short legs approached me; he was naked except for a pair of greasy duck workman’s trousers.
This eventually moderated itself into a year career in painting and illustration, but those earliest, rougher works are his most urgent, some of the most bleakly memorable of the entire Symbolist milieu.
