Edward Gorey’s mordant masterpiece The Wuggly Ump charts the fate of three wholesome children whose happy days weaving chains of flowers are cut short. “Sing tirraloo, sing tirralay, The Wuggly Ump lives far away.” That is one of my favorite beginnings to an Edward Gorey book. What’s upm to like? One of his step-mothers was Corinna Mura, a cabaret singer who had a brief role in the classic film Casablanca. Oct 17, Jeff Svare rated it it was amazing. This is one of my favorites of Edward’s. Great use of color and I hope somebody out there has a tattoo of the final illustration. Gorey has been creating for John Ciardi’s books.

Sep 02, Quitealice rated it liked it. This ogrey used an interior illustration and standardized type on the cover and is not nearly as attractive a book as the first edition. The illustrations are simple, colorful, and resemble the happy drawings Mr.

Published September 1st by Pomegranate Communications first published I’m not entirley sure what the moral of this story is but I think it’s that if you’re a kid who behaves, eats all your dinner and say your prayers before bedtime a hideous monster will arrive at your front door and eat you.

The Wuggly Ump is actually a rather large fellow with jagged teeth that likes to snack on umbrella’s, doorknobs In later years he illustrated many children’s books by John Bellairs, as well as books in several series begun by Bellairs and continued by other authors after his death.

Such terrible, awful, monstrous edwaard can happen on such normal seeming days! However we all know that in Edward Gorey’s world children are not permitted to live a long happy life so along comes the Wuggly Ump to devour them whole.

Really loved this one. It’s good as far as it goes, but maybe a little too short and a little too straightforward. So behave like a little tyrant and everything will turn out OK.
Only Edward Gorey knew for sure, but edwarx is the only book that this rare creature appears in.
